As a sector-switcher, I don’t represent the target audience for “Daring to Lead 2011,” a presentation offered by Donors Forum in May, but I found myself riveted by the presentations and panel discussion. What could have been dry statistics was transformed into a compelling, and at times humorous, presentation by Jeanne Bell, CEO of Compass Point.

The way Eric Brown, communications director for the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, tells it in a recent Communications Network webinar, it wasn't a sudden "Eureka moment" that sparked his desire to assess the effectiveness of the training programs his foundation had been offering for years to help grantees develop effective communications skills.
Donors Forum wants to help grantmakers better understand program-related investments and regard them as an accessible tool to further their social impact.
As a professional who works with both individual donors and family foundations to implement effective and meaningful giving strategies, I considered David La Piana’s observations on the changes in the sector in the context of how they might shape the philanthropic advising profession and how they might inform our understanding of the “best practices” we impart to our clients.
The December 13, 2010 edition of The Chicago Tribune featured Donors Forum Member, Eleanor Foundation, noting results of educational initiatives that help lower-income working women.
Nationwide individuals’ charitable giving is by far the largest source of private contributions to nonprofits: in 2010 individuals’ giving accounted for 81% of all private donations, totaling $211 billion. 8% of these donations are from bequests with the remaining 73% from individuals, according to the Giving USA 2011 report that incorporates data from the IRS, issued in June.
