order to help the victims affected by these tragedies. The
CNA Foundation will match gifts made to qualified organizations
through June 30, 2008. Employees who want to provide
monetary support to the relief efforts can have their
contributions matched dollar for dollar for amounts
from $25 up to $5,000. Matching gift forms must be received
by June 30, 2008. All organizations receiving CNA Foundation

Microsoft
- We at Microsoft are incredibly saddened
by the devastation caused by the earthquake in the
Sichuan province in China and our hearts go out to
the many people impacted by this tragedy.
- We have confirmed that all of our
staff in Chengdu, Chongqing and the rest of the country
are safe and accounted for. Our office is closed today
in Chengdu. We are advising our employees not to report
to the office but to stay in a safe location and attend
to personal matters. The Chengdu building suffered
some damage, and the communications infrastructure
in the area has been partially disrupted. We are in
contact with many of our employees through multiple
channels and are providing them with updates on regular
basis.
- Microsoft is committed to supporting
the relief and recovery efforts and is working with
humanitarian relief organizations to determine their
exact IT-related needs.
- Microsoft is taking a number
of immediate steps to help address this tragic situation:
- We are making an initial donation
of one million Chinese Yuan (approximately US
$125,000) to the Red Cross Society of China.
- Our China subsidiary is reaching
out to local response organizations to identify
areas where our technology and other support can
help.
- Through our partnership with
NetHope, the largest relief organizations are
using technology to prioritize relief efforts
and match available resources. By enabling communication,
collaboration and decision making, technology
can literally save thousands of lives.
- We will make use of our corporate
and local Chinese home pages for Microsoft.com
and MSN.com visited by millions per day
to connect the general public with how
they can donate to over 40 organizations that
are providing assistance on the ground.
- We have informed our 78,000
employees worldwide how they can help; Microsoft
will match contributions from our Chinese and
US-based employees.
- Where possible, we are proactively
reaching out to our small, medium and enterprise
customers in the impacted area to offer technical
support, free of charge, if assistance is needed
to get their technology solutions up and running
again.
- These efforts are part of
Microsofts long-standing commitment to disaster
response; we believe technology can play a vital role
in bringing desperately needed assistance to distressed
communities more rapidly and efficiently. Examples
of past assistance include:
- Enabling refugee registration
for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees
- Integrating hardware, software,
and data for capturing, managing, analyzing, and
displaying all forms of geographically referenced
information around disaster impact areas through
Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Multi-agency coordination and
decision making through Sharepoint portal based
applications.
